Leaves, Pumpkins and Paddles: Four Fall Racket Games to Play at Home

The leaves are changing, the pumpkins are out, and your little one has a whole yard full of new things to play with. Good news: fall is one of the best seasons for racket games at home. Leaves, pumpkins and breezy afternoons turn into targets, balance challenges and giggles with almost no setup.

Here are four easy games to try this month. All you need is a paddle or racket sized for little hands, a soft ball or balloon, and whatever the season has dropped in your yard.

Four fall racket games

  1. Leaf Carry. Lay a big, flat leaf on the face of the paddle and walk across the yard. Can you get the leaf all the way to the pumpkin? Carrying something steady on a paddle builds balance and a calm, careful wrist, and it makes a great first game for the youngest players.
  2. Pumpkin Target. Set a small pumpkin on the grass and stand a few steps back. Roll or toss a soft ball at it, or tap the ball along the ground with the paddle. Move the pumpkin closer for a quick win, or farther away for a bigger challenge. Kids love knocking things over, and this one is all about aiming.
  3. Falling Leaf Catch. Toss a leaf into the air and watch it float down. Your child tries to catch it on the paddle before it lands. Leaves fall slowly, which gives little eyes and little hands plenty of time to line up. Cheer for every try, because following something moving is a skill all on its own.
  4. Balloon Breeze Rally. On a calm day, bat a balloon back and forth with a paddle, counting hits out loud. Balloons float slowly, so even the smallest players can keep a rally going. See if you can reach ten together, then try for a new record.

Tips to keep it joyful

Keep each game short and let your child lead. If they want to jump in the leaf pile first, that is part of the fun. Celebrate effort out loud, with high fives and big smiles, and switch to a new game whenever your child gets curious about something else. When a game ends on a laugh, your child will ask to play again tomorrow.

You can make any of these games a little easier or a little bigger. Younger players can stand close, use a big soft ball, and take as many tries as they like. Older preschoolers can add counting, move farther back, or invent their own rules. Kids love being the boss of a game.

How this connects to class

These games build the same skills we practice every week: catching, carrying, aiming and rallying. Every Ready Set Rackets class is a flow of quick games the whole group plays together, led by a coach out front. Racky, our friendly paddle mascot, turns each game into a fun challenge, so it feels like play from the first minute to the last.

Families at our 45+ partner locations in Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Florida and Texas often tell us the games from class show up in the backyard the next day. Ready Tots is for ages 18 months to 2 years and 11 months, with a grownup on the floor. Ready Athletes is for ages 3 to 5.
