5 Racket Games You Can Play at Home With Your Little One

You do not need a court, a net, or even a real paddle to start building a little racket player. You need a balloon, something flat to swing (a real mini paddle is great, but a sturdy paper plate or a pot lid with a handle works), and about ten minutes of floor space. Here are five games straight from our classes that work beautifully at home.

1. Balloon Rally

The all-time champion. Blow up a balloon and count how many times your child can bump it up in the air with the paddle before it touches the ground. Balloons fall in slow motion, which gives little eyes and hands time to track and react. Celebrate the record like it is the championship point. Secretly, this builds tracking and timing.

2. Alligator Catch

Hold the paddle flat like an alligator's open mouth and try to "chomp" a tossed balloon or soft ball by trapping it against a second paddle, a wall, or the floor. Big chomping sound effects are required by law. Secretly, this builds hand-eye coordination.

3. Waiter Walk

Place a ball, a beanbag, or a stuffed animal on the paddle and have your child carry it across the room like a fancy waiter without dropping it. Add obstacles as they improve: around the couch, under the table, on tiptoes. Secretly, this builds balance and control.

4. Hit the Hula

Lay a hula hoop, a laundry basket, or a bath towel on the floor and have your child try to land a gentle hit or roll inside the target. Move the target farther away as they get better. Secretly, this builds aim and soft hands.

5. Red Light, Green Light, Racket Edition

The classic, but everyone carries a paddle with a ball balanced on it. Green light means walk fast, red light means freeze without dropping the ball. Secretly, this builds listening skills and body control, the two things every coach on earth is grateful for.

The one rule for all five

Quit while it is still fun. Five great minutes today beats twenty forced minutes that end in tears. If your child asks to play again tomorrow, the game did its job. That is the entire philosophy behind Ready Set Rackets: kids who think they are playing will happily build real skills for years.
