You set up a fun game. Your child is thrilled for about three minutes. Then they wander off to look at a leaf, a dog, or the dust on the floor, and you are left holding the ball, smiling, wondering where they went.
That is exactly how little kids are built to play: in short, happy bursts. Once you know that, it is easy to plan games that fit.
The part of the brain that helps a person stay with one thing for a long time is still growing at this age. A rough rule many early childhood experts share is that a child can focus on one activity for only a few minutes per year of age. So a two year old may give you a couple of minutes, and a five year old may give you ten or so, and only when the activity is something they love.
Racket play asks a lot of a small brain. Your child has to watch the ball, move their feet, hold the racket, swing at the right moment, and remember what comes next. That is a lot of thinking for a small brain. When your child drifts off for a moment, they are usually just taking a quick break.
From 18 months to about 2 years and 11 months, expect very short bursts. A grownup on the floor helps a lot at this age, because your child will keep checking in with you. Following their lead is part of the game.
Between 3 and 5, children can stay with a game longer, especially when it has a clear goal and lots of movement. You will still see wandering on tired or hungry days, and that is normal.
Every Ready Set Rackets class is a flow of quick games the whole group plays together, led by a coach out front. Games change often, so a child who is ready to move on never has to wait long. Racky, our friendly paddle mascot, turns each game into a fun challenge, so every minute feels like play.
Because the whole group moves from one game to the next together, everyone stays busy and every game feels fresh. Coaches at our 45+ partner locations in Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Florida and Texas plan for short, happy bursts on purpose. It is the starting point for the whole class.
We group by age so the games fit the child in front of us. Ready Tots is for ages 18 months to 2 years and 11 months, with a grownup on the floor. Ready Athletes is for ages 3 to 5.
