July 10, 2026 • From the Ready Set Rackets coaches
Here is the question we hear most from parents: "Is my kid too young for this?" And here is the honest answer from coaches who teach toddlers every week: probably not. Kids can fall in love with racket sports much earlier than most families think. What changes with age is not whether they can play, but what playing looks like.
At this age, nobody is learning a forehand, and that is completely fine. What a toddler can do is chase a balloon, balance on a line, carry a ball on a paddle like a waiter, and giggle the entire time. Every one of those games is quietly building balance, coordination, and body confidence, which are the exact foundations every sport sits on later.
The one non-negotiable at this age is that a parent or caregiver plays too. Little ones learn by copying the person they trust most. That is why our Ready Tots classes are parent-and-me. You are not watching from a bench. You are part of the game.
Around age three, something clicks. Kids can follow simple directions, take a short turn, and celebrate like champions when the ball lands where they aimed. This is the sweet spot for a first real class, as long as the class is built for how this age actually works: short activities, silly game names, constant movement, and a coach who leads every step.
What to look for in any program, ours or anyone's: kids should never be standing in a line waiting. At this age, a bored kid is a done kid. A good class flows from one quick game to the next so every child is moving, swinging, and smiling the whole time.
School-age kids are ready for the good stuff: real rallies, game-like challenges, and the pride of pulling off something they could not do last month. This is also the age where a kid who has been playing racket games since preschool visibly stands out, not because of talent, but because the ball simply does not surprise them anymore.
If your child is starting fresh at six or seven, do not worry one bit. This age picks things up fast. The bigger risk is waiting so long that trying something new feels scary instead of fun. Ready Set Rackets classes run through age five. Once your child is six, our junior clinics at Universal Rackets pick up right where we leave off.
There is no magic birthday. The right age to start is whenever your child can experience a racket and a ball as a toy, not a test. Our job as coaches, and yours as a parent, is to protect that feeling as long as possible. Kids who think they are playing will happily practice for years. Kids who think they are performing burn out by ten.
So if your little one is stacking cups, chasing bubbles, or swinging a spatula at absolutely everything, they are ready for the fun version of racket sports. That is the version we teach.
